NIPPERS PROGRAM

NIPPER PROGRAM 2024/25

The Torquay Surf Life Saving Club (SLSC) Nipper Program is open to children aged 5 to 13 beginning in October and continuing until the mid February the following year.  Through delivery of the Torquay SLSC Nipper Program we aim to provide a pathway for future lifesavers through life saving skill development and surf sports.  We encourage families and friends to come together in a community service and to foster an appreciation and respect for the ocean and natural environment.

Nippers develop their surf skills like wading, surf swimming, board paddling and beach flags.  They learn about the dynamic beach and ocean environment and how to enjoy it safely with their friends and family.

As we are a community focused, volunteer run club we need all families to contribute to the running of our Nipper Program and the ongoing sustainability of our club.  There is a job for everyone, whether that’s selling merchandise, cooking sausages, helping with set up and pack down, fundraising and much more.  Please reach out to find out how you can help.

To participate in the Nipper Program, children must be part of a family membership at the Torquay SLSC for the current financial season 2024/25 which opened on 1 May 2024.

There are two components to the Torquay SLSC Nipper Program, the Summer Holiday Program and Junior Aquatic Surf Sports:

 

• The Summer Holiday Program (SHP) is perfect for the new nipper!  We deliver an intensive surf education program where nippers learn about the ocean and beach safety and are taught a range of essential surf skills in a safe and fun environment.
• Junior Aquatic Surf Sports is suited to nippers of all skills and abilities and all members are encouraged to take part.  Nippers will improve their standard of surf skills through regular training and will be supported to compete at carnivals and the Victorian Junior Championships.  The focus is on developing lifesaving skills and how they can apply them to competition in beach and water events.  They learn to build fitness and resilience whilst having lots of fun!

LORNE NIPPER TRAINING CAMP

This season’s Lorne training camp is tentatively booked for Friday 15th to Sunday 17th November 2024 – All welcome.

JUNIOR AQUATIC SURF SPORTS TRAINING

Our regular nipper surf sports training season will begin on Sunday 20th of October 2024.

This is for nipper age groups U8 – U13 and will run on

• Sunday mornings from 9.00 to 10.30am
• Wednesday afternoons from 5.30 to 6.30pm

The U7 age group will begin on Sunday 1st December and will only run on a Sunday morning from 9.15am to 10.15am. 

U6 will run only in the Summer Holiday Program.  U6 may start before the SHP if we can organise sufficient volunteers to run the age group.

Age is taken on 30 September 2024.  Nippers must be at least 5 years of age and no older than 12 years of age on this date to be eligible for the nipper program.  Nipper age is set by Surf Life Saving Australia and is implemented by all clubs Australia wide.  Children who turn 5 after 30 September 2024 but before the start of the SHP may join in if there is room in the U6 age group.  This is at the discretion of the Director of Junior Development.

 

SUMMER HOLIDAY PROGRAM

Planned dates and timing for the 2024/25 Summer Holiday Program are Friday 27 December 2024 from until Saturday 4 January 2025 running from 8:30 – 10.30am daily (excluding New Years Day)

We would encourage all nippers to enter the Cosy Corner Junior Carnival on Friday 3 January 2025.

Presentation and disco date and time to be confirmed.
